Elaine Kaufman, You Will Be Missed
The culinary world has lost one of it’s most beautiful souls. Elaine Kaufman, owner of renowned Elaine’s in New York City. The Upper East Side establishment has been a hang out for entertainers. It’s the home-away-from-home for generations of athletes, writers, musicians and actors for decades. Kaufman passed from complications of emphysema at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. She was 81.
Singer Billy Joel immortalized Kaufman’s self-named eatery in his 1979 hit Big Shot with the line, “They were all impressed with your Halston dress/And the people that you knew at Elaine’s.” The new Harrison Ford/Rachael McAdams film Morning Glory shot a scene there in which the beloved Ms. Kaufman made a cameo. It is the quintessential New York restaurant and it’s owner will be sorely missed.
