ICA: Symon vs. Hearst
Barely 24, Chef Emma Hearst is the youngest challenger ever to enter Kitchen Stadium! She challenges old pro Iron Chef Michael Symon. Will youth and exuberance trump age and experience?
Emma Hearst is the chef and owner of the Allen Street eatery Sorella. The cozy little restaurant celebrates the food of Italy’s Piedmontese region.
The first thing one notices about Chef Emma is just how stunning she is. Emma was voted the winner of Eater‘s Hottest Chef in NYC in 2009 and one of the 20 “It”Girls of 2010 by Page Six Mag. It stands to reason; she is a member of a family that has produced a number of models including super model Lydia Hearst-Shaw.
Chef Hearst is the great-great-granddaughter of legendary publisher William Randolph Hearst but she grew up apart from her famous relatives. She suffered through life at Albany Academy for Girls in upstate New York and began working in professional kitchens at age 13. Does that sound young? Not really when you consider that Chef Emma decided to become a chef at the age of 4.
Hearst attended CIA and worked the line at Union Square Cafe before opening her own place, Sorella, a little over two years ago. Since opening the doors the buzz on the Lower East Side has been all about the tiny little Italian restaurant with the all girl kitchen. The hip, innovative menu reflects the youthful energy of the staff, none of whom are over the age of 28. For more about Chef Emma Hearst I recommend this great interview with her at Gothamist.
Hearst is so talented, so attractive and so connected that one wonders if this ICA appearance might be a prelude to her own cooking show. Don’t believe me? Check this out:
Waiting for Chef Emma in Kitchen Stadium is the toughest of the Iron Chefs, Michael Symon. The judges for Battle: Mozzarella were Mario Rizzotti, Donatella Arpaia and David Rocco.
