Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives Canceled?

Guy Fieri on the BeachPage Productions which produces Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, Outrageous Food and a handful of other popular food shows is suing the Food Network.  They are accusing the network of pulling a chew-and-screw.  The term refers to people who order dinner at a restaurant then skip out on the bill.

According to a law suit in Minnesota Federal Court, Page alleges that Food Network agreed to purchase three more seasons of Diners totaling 39 episodes.  But one year into the agreement Food Network wants to pull out.

Apparently it isn’t a ratings issue as Food Network wants to keep running Triple D they just don’t want Page involved in it anymore.  So it isn’t really canceled per se it just isn’t currently in production.  Food Network, who owns the contract with star Guy Fieri, claims to be unable to “provide the services of the host.”

Though things should work themselves out in court for now the uncertainty is sure to leave Food Network fans feeling shell shocked.  Especially considering Alton Brown’s announcement this past spring to shut down production of his hit series Good Eats.  If things do not work out that means that two of the network’s most popular shows would no longer be a part of their line-up.

Page Productions also alleges that Food Network has not paid them for work already completed.  The suit was filed by Minneapolis-based law firm Fredrikson & Byron on behalf of Page on May 13th of this year.  The suit does not interfere with Page’s other Food Network property Outrageous Food staring Tom Pizzica.

UPDATE: The Triple D law suit has been settled.  Learn the outcome HERE.

McGuire’s Irish Pub in Pensacola

No visit to Pensacola, Florida is complete without visiting two locally owned restaurants, Flounder’s on Santa Rosa Sound and McGuire’s Irish Pub on E. Gregory St.  As fate would have it both are owned by the same people. We’ll visit Flounder’s another time, for now we’ll focus on the Irish pub with the oak and copper brewery.

McGuires Irish Pub is bursting with personality. From the iconic double decker bus that helps confused tourist find their way to the dollar bills hanging from the ceiling everything at McGuire’s screams character.  Oh, and be careful when going to the restroom, that’s all I’m going to say on the subject.  But schtick and charisma will only get you so far in the restaurant industry.  To make it since 1977 you have got to have the goods.

McGuire’s features both remarkable food and a full blown brewery churning craft beers like Wild Irish Raspberry Wheat, Red Ale, Light Ale, Porter and Irish Stout.  Brewery tours with brewmasters Tom Anderson or Madison Roane are available upon request adn home brewers are even encouraged to take home a bit of McGuire’s yeast.

The food is an adventure it and of itself.  Appetizers like Senate Bean Soup (only .18 with a meal) and Ruben Eggrolls (featured on Food Network’s The Best Thing I Ever Ate) set the tone for a meal just left of center.  They half an ocean of seafood, plenty of pasta, steaks, chops and 28 (count ’em 28) different burgers.  Check out patron the Garbage Burger that was featured on Outrageous Food hosted by Aaron McCargo Jr. below. McGuire’s also has another pub down the road in Destin.

SERIES PREMIERE
Best In Smoke: Premieres Sunday, May 8th at 10pm
Hailing from cities across the United States, six of the best barbecue masters meet in New York to face off for a $50,000 grand prize and the right to claim the title of Best In Smoke. Hosted by Bryan Caswell (season three contestant on The Next Iron Chef), this competition tests the competitors’ endurance and skill as they take on multiple challenges in a day with limited resources and cook for vastly different audiences. From barbecue desserts to single bite hors d’oeuvres, no food is off limits. Contestants show off their personal style and quick wit throughout the competition, but a final mad dash to three separate venues around Manhattan and Brooklyn will determine which competitor will be awarded the coveted title of Best In Smoke.

·         Premieres Sunday, May 8th at 10pm –“Best Bite in BBQ” (*Note special time)
Host Bryan Caswell kicks off the competition by challenging the six teams to create their best “single bite” for the judges. Once the clock starts, it’s an all-out scramble to the meat truck, and the competitor who cooks up the best “single bite” wins immunity from elimination and joins the judging panel for the next round. Then, the competitors devise the ideal BBQ hors d’oeuvre for an upscale art gallery opening. The fate of the finalists hangs on the opinions of the gallery guests who decide which competitor is safe from elimination.
·         Premieres Sunday, May 15th at 9pm – “Unorthodox BBQ and Birthday Party”
The competitors must create a BBQ-inspired salad and dessert from pre-determined ingredients, so only their skill will separate them from the pack. After two hours of cooking, the judges’ favorite gets a special advantage going into the next competition. For round two, the competitors have three hours to whip up an appetizing BBQ snack for a children’s birthday party, but the twist is no burgers or hot dogs allowed. At the party, each kid picks their favorite dish to decide who will be safe from elimination.
·         Premieres Sunday, May 22nd at 9pm –“Vendor Wars”
The four remaining competitors take it to the streets, operating vendor carts and serving up hot BBQ to tourists. For this challenge, their assistants are off the hook, so competitors pair up and work together in teams. At the park, the tourists purchase their choice BBQ dishes with tickets. The team with the most tickets wins and will participate in the final judging of the other team, while the competitor with the least tickets will say goodbye.
·         Premieres Sunday, May 29th at 9pm – “Season Finale”
The final challenge tests the limits of the remaining competitors’ culinary knowledge, as well as their stamina, by having them cater three different events in one day. Each location will showcase a different element of the New York lifestyle including ballparks, Broadway and bars. Each finalist must feature brisket in at least one of their meals, which can take up to twelve hours to cook. After catering three distinct events, the most well-rounded pit master is named “Best In Smoke.”
